Moved from Northern Indiana to begin new role at South
(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – South Decatur has a new principal who is getting rave reviews from faculty this year.
Principal Amy Cockburn moved to the area after serving as a principal at a junior-senior high school in northern Indiana for the past three years.
Her daughter graduated high school last year and is now attending IU. That is one of the reasons she decided to explore career opportunities in southern Indiana.
Cockburn is familiar with the area as she has spent time at Camp Atterbury while serving in the National Guard. She also served as an active duty combat medic.
Another aspect that appealed to her, is the outdoor opportunities as she competes in races and also enjoys mountain biking, kayaking and hiking.
A South Decatur teacher recently reached out to The 812 to inform us that the new principal is ‘crushing it!’
“She attends all sports events, home and away, and has been super supportive as I’m both a teacher and a coach,” the faculty member said. “She’s covered an open gym for me because I was sick and going to have to cancel.”
Amy says South Decatur has been the perfect fit so far. She enjoys being at a smaller school where stronger relationships can be formed among students and faculty.
“I really enjoy getting to know the kids on a personal level and being able to talk about their game or band performance the night before,” she told The 812. Cockburn also credits the staff and administrators at the school for creating a welcoming environment.
“The staff is incredible here and no matter the day of the week, the teachers and kids here are always great,” she said. “I feel very blessed to be here and it is really easy to get involved.”
Amy added that she doesn’t seek attention, but hopes this introduction to the larger community can bring more awareness to the great things happening at South Decatur.
