Honors Northern Indiana teen killed in 2000
(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – There is an ongoing small grant opportunity for teachers in our area.
It was started in Northern Indiana in honor of Cheryl Lyn Welter, a Knox High School senior who was killed in a car crash in 2000.
Her family created this initiative to provide grants three times a year that benefits teachers and students in rural Indiana.
The grant awards up to $600 to teachers for projects that range from field trips and school supplies, to whatever benefits students in the classroom.
“We’ve given out 311 grants so far and I would bet they’ve been used in 250 ways. The teachers are writing their own grants,” said Harold Welter.
Harold added that some of his favorite awarded grants helped fund training for a service dog and another that went toward classroom maintenance.
There are 20 grants distributed three times a year. The next time funds will be awarded will be in January, followed by April and September.
Welter was in Versailles Sunday afternoon to share the story of his daughter as well as the grant opportunity.
“There has never been a teacher in Ripley County to apply for one of our grants, hint, hint,” Welter told the audience.
Welter is a legendary high school sports announcer in northern Indiana, who retired in 2022 to devote all of his efforts to his daughter’s legacy. He also served as a press secretary on Capitol Hill and owns a successful financial firm.
Welter wrote a book titled “Joy In The Mourning” to help other parents who have lost a child.
