Performed Anthem on Saturday
(AURORA Ind.) – A South Dearborn Middle School student had a unique rendition of the National Anthem.
12-year-old Wyatt Short used his electric guitar to perform the Anthem before a middle school wrestling invitational on Saturday.
The seventh grader didn’t miss a beat as it drew quite a bit of attention from the crowd.
His grandmother, Margie, says Wyatt began playing guitar around a young age and inherited his talents from her father.
Here's Wyatt when he was a toddler:
"Wyatt can hear a song and play it, he's that talented and we are so proud of him," Margie said.
Vietnam veteran PG Gentrup saw the National Anthem performance and gifted Short a Star Spangled Banner Challenge Coin.
"We need more of that patriotism, and it's our duty as parents, grandparents, and especially veterans, to show these kids why they have their freedoms and why it's important to show patriotism," Gentrup said.
Wyatt tells The 812 that his success comes from taking lessons from local musician Dave Getzendanner.
"Dave has been a great influence on me, teaching technique and respect for all types of music," Wyatt said.
