The 812 is very proud of our favorite local player!
(GREENSBURG, Ind.) -- This is Steven Harmeyer and you may be surprised to learn that I have a bias when it comes to local news coverage.
My bias is simple...I have a favorite local basketball player this year and it's Jacob Scruggs of South Decatur!
I met the senior while covering a story about a student-led Bible study program at South Decatur High School.
Scruggs helped create the fellowship program that welcomes students into the school library at 7:15 a.m. every Tuesday.
"It really brings a smile to my face when I see new people here," Scruggs told The 812 in November.
During our interview, Scruggs said his dream was to play college basketball.
We later learned that Jacob had also taken time to read books to South Decatur first graders last spring.
Here's a photo of Jacob reading to first graders:
"One little kid was even wearing his Cougar shirt with Jake’s name on the back of it," said his mother, Heather.
Jacob has just received a scholarship offer from Ottawa University in Kansas to continue his basketball career!
He hasn't committed yet as he continues to weigh his options.
We are proud of you Jacob, and whether you choose Ottawa, or anywhere else, any college basketball team would be lucky to have you!
