South Ripley SRO saves choking student Friday

Happened during breakfast in the cafeteria

(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – A school resource officer is being praised for his quick actions Friday morning.

South Ripley students were having breakfast in the high school cafeteria when a sophomore started choking.

School Resource Officer Eddie Rodriguez saw that the student was in distress and ran over to check on him.

Rodriguez successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver and the student is now safe.

South Ripley school nurse Mandy Rohrig is applauding Rodriguez for his immediate response and says this serves as a reminder about the importance of training.

“This is exactly why we train every staff member in our building. If there is a choking child, the chances are that the school nurse is not the first person on the scene, so it’s important that all staff is trained,” Rohrig said.

She added, “It only takes a few seconds and this could have went a much worse way this morning.

Rodriguez has served as South Ripley’s SRO since 2019.
