South Dearborn student-athlete helps opponent
(AURORA, Ind.) -- This week we're recognizing a South Dearborn student who went above-and-beyond to help an opponent.
The boy's soccer team was playing Taylor High School when one of the opposing players went to the ground with a cramp.
Knights player Nakia Scruggs jumped right in to help the Taylor player who was on the ground.
It led Taylor High School to nominate Scruggs with an IHSAA Champions Pin, which is given to a player who shows sportsmanship to an opponent.
He was awarded the pin by referee Eric Clark on Monday.
"Nakia was awarded the sportsmanship pin after being recognized by the head official for going above and beyond showing great character in a display of sportsmanship," said athletic director Ryan Walston.
During high school, Nakia has earned 6 varsity letters, including 3 in track and field, and 3 in boys soccer. Nakia was last season's boys track team MVP. He was a member of the record setting 4×800 relay team of Blake Lagaly, Easton Schumann, Jason Hail, and Nakia Scruggs that took 1st place in the sectional and broke the South Dearborn school and the Sectional Record.
