"The Court’s decision made our entire region safer," prosecutor said.
(VEVAY, Ind.) -- A former Lawrenceburg man involved in a multi-county police chase has been sentenced for meth.
41-year-old Edward Kinnett led police on a pursuit that began in Vevay and ended in Madison in September of 2021.
Officers said speeds reached 100 miles per per hour before the chase came to an end. During the pursuit, police said Kinnett threw methamphetamine from the vehicle.
Kinnett pled guilty in a Switzerland County courtroom to meth possession and a sentencing hearing was held this week.
During sentencing, prosecutors argued that the amount of methamphetamine thrown from the vehicle was far in excess of an amount typically associated with drug dealing, not personal use.
Prosecutors also said Kinnnett was a repeat offender with approximately 19 prior convictions in 3 states over the past 25 years.
Switzerland County judge Gregory Coy gave Kinnett the maximum sentence of 23 years in the Department of Corrections.
"The evidence showed that when Eddie Kinnett ran from police he engaged in a highly dangerous pursuit that only ended after the brave and selfless response from multiple officers in two neighboring communities," Switzerland County Prosecutor Ryan Marshall said.
Marshall added, "Kinnett’s choices were part of a 25-year pattern of repeated criminal behavior. That pattern ended when our Circuit Judge thoughtfully considered evidence from both parties and issued a fair sentence that was necessary to protect our community. The Court’s decision made our entire region safer and we are grateful for it.”
