Smithson following passion for journalism and education
(VEVAY, Ind.) – This is Steven Harmeyer and I am so excited to announce this HUGE news!
Switzerland County senior Cadyn Smithson has just signed a book publishing deal.
Smithson is our student journalist for Switzerland County Schools and is one of the most impressive teens you’ll meet anywhere in Southeast Indiana.
The 17-year-old published his first children's book called "Benji Goes to Bed" in October.
He wrote the book to help children develop a bedtime routine and practice healthy sleeping habits.
Cadyn is an education advocate and spends part of his school day working with kindergarteners at Jefferson-Craig Elementary in Vevay.
Last fall, he began pursuing a publishing deal to assist him with marketing and distribution.
Smithson has signed with Palmetto Publishing and it became official on Thursday.
He is now working on a new book geared toward third and fourth graders that will be called ‘Finn Miller: A Detective's Journal.’
The book is expected to be released this fall and Smithson says the goal is to allow young readers to be part of the story.
“I want to make content that kids enjoy, and I work with children and can see what they are picking up and what is grabbing their attention, and honestly, Finn Miller is somewhat based off myself,” Smithson laughed.
Already a published author, Cadyn will major in journalism at the University of Southern Indiana next year.
I asked Cadyn what his advice would be to others who have similar dreams.
“You can really do anything. You just have to get out there, make connections, and manifest your dreams. I know it sounds cliche, but that is what I’ve been doing the past three years, and it works,” he answered.
