Teen hosting Tree City Trading Card show to honor coach on Saturday

Card collectors invited to unique local event

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – A South Ripley graduate is using his hobby to host an event for a good cause this weekend.

19-year-old Ryan Gorrell was a South Ripley baseball player who credits his success on the field to coach Tim Howard, of Greensburg.

Tim coached the sport for many years and served as the Raider’s assistant varsity coach during Ryan’s junior year. He also coached a travel ball team that consisted of Decatur and Ripley County ballplayers.

Tim passed away at the age of 59 in October 2022.

Ryan, along with Tim’s wife, Sharon, started a scholarship in Tim’s honor. The scholarship is for baseball players in Ripley and Decatur County who are pursuing their postsecondary education.

When Ryan wasn’t on the field during high school, he became known for his expertise in sports trading cards. It’s a hobby that he remains passionate about to this day.

Gorrell has organized an event called the Tree City Card Show this Saturday and all the proceeds will go to the Tim Howard Scholarship.

It features more than 40 vendors and Ryan says there will be something there for everyone.

“We have 44 vendors right now and there is everything from 1950’s baseball cards to Pokemon cards,” he said.

Gorrell held a similar trading card show earlier this year and it attracted people from across Southeast Indiana as well as Indianapolis.

It will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg on Saturday, September 28.

The church is located on East Hunter Robbins Way.
