Thanksgiving costs in Southeast Indiana 50 years ago

Updated: Nov 26

One grocery store suffered an explosion

(SOUTHEAST INDIANA) – Thanksgiving is this week and we’re taking a look back at what prices were like 50 years ago.

Knueven’s IGA had stores in Sunman, New Alsace in Greensburg. An advertisement for their prices was put into the Batesville Herald-Tribune on November 20, 1974.

The cost of turkey was 49 cents per pound at their stores. An average turkey weighs 12-15 pounds, meaning the cost in our area 50 years ago was about $6.86 for the average family.

One major change over the past 50 years is the increase in the cost of flour. In 1974, local IGA stores listed a 5-pound bag for 69 cents. The current cost at Kroger is $4.49.

Cranberry sauce has also went up from 33 cents in 1974 to a current price of $2.49. In regard to pie filling, the current cost at Kroger is $3.99 opposed to 29 cents a half-century ago.

Want yams and potatoes for Thanksgiving? In 1974, yams cost 19 cents per pound and a ten pound bag of potatoes was listed for $1.19.

One local grocery store was not having a great Thanksgiving a half-century ago.

An explosion occurred at the IGA in Osgood on November 15 , 1974. The store was owned by George Byard.

There were no injuries as the explosion blew out the rear section of the store .

Investigators at the time believed dynamite was placed on the roof. Trooper John Mann said they were searching for evidence of an incinerating device as there were no signs of a break-in at the store.

Here is a photo from the Batesville Herald-Tribune on November 20, 1974 of the store:
