More than 232K were sold last year
(BATESVILLE, Ind.) -- Thousands of people are expected to travel to Batesville and wait in line for hours for Cherry Thing-A-Lings over the next few days.
Schmidt Bakery's annual cherry fritter sale starts this morning and will continue through Monday, February 19.
The bakery is open from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day during the sale.
A box of one dozen Thing-a-Lings costs $20.
Some customers have already gotten their hands on the fritters as the bakery began taking online orders last month. The deadline to place shipping orders is on Monday or until their sold out.
Owners Clem and Bertie Schmidt created the President's Day weekend tradition back in the 1970's and it's based on the legend of George Washington chopping down a cherry tree.
Bertie Schmidt said the fritter frenzy really got a boost when the Cincinnati TV stations began covering the annual event.
"The reporters would be on live television and say 'Oh, you got to come out to Batesville for this,'" she recalled.
Last year, the bakery sold 19,365 dozen which means more than 232,300 individual Cherry Thing-a-Lings were purchased.
