Todd Siebert Foundation at Ball State for ALS Day

Siebert remembered while raising ALS awareness

(MUNCIE, Ind.) – The Todd Siebert Memorial Foundation helped organize an ALS awareness event at Ball State last month.

Siebert passed away in 2021 at the age of 51 after a battle with ALS.

His family and friends have vowed to keep his memory alive while raising funds for others who battle the terminal disease.

The event was coordinated by the foundation along with Ball State’s Dr. Philip Smaldino, who works in the Biology department.

It began with a luncheon with patients and their caregivers, which was followed by tours of the Foundational Sciences Building and students demonstrated how they use research mice to study these diseases.

Later in the day, Todd Siebert Memorial Foundation Chairperson Erin Eckerle gave a moving reflection on what it is like to lose a loved one from ALS.

She also highlighted the great work that the foundation is doing to raise awareness and funds for ALS care and research.

Here are some photos from the Ball State event:

ALS is a progressive, terminal neurodegenerative disease that causes a decline in motor neurons in the nervous system, resulting in a loss of muscular function and control. There is no cure for ALS yet.

“This event showcases the wonderful work Dr. Philip Smaldino, his lab, and our campus are doing to progress our understanding of ALS and develop more treatment options,” Dr. Tim Carter, Chair of the Department of Biology, said. “We seek to inspire those afflicted with ALS and their loved ones that there is hope for a cure and a better future. By supporting our research efforts, we can alleviate those suffering from ALS and improve their quality of life.”

The annual Big T Open was held at North Branch Golf Course which raised money for ALS research, in honor of Siebert.
