We're celebrating Bob King of Franklin County!

We're celebrating Bob King of Franklin County as our Veteran of the Week!

The Oldenburg native graduated from high school in 1964 and had a choice between college or serving his country.

“I considered college but wasn’t interested in it at that point in my life. My older brother was a Navy Veteran, and I felt this was a better option for me,” King said.

Along with a close friend, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy just a month after high school.

After graduating from boot camp, he was stationed in Virginia at the Nuclear Weapons Training Center as a communications carrier.

He was then assigned to the USS Nimble for a six month deployment to the Mediterranean.

While in Barcelona, the ship would play a crucial role following a deadly Air Force accident.

A B-52 bomber collided with another plane during mid-air refueling off the coast of Spain. At the time of the crash, the B-52 was carrying a nuclear bomb.

King and his crew participated in the recovery efforts of what is known as the 1966 Palomares B-52 crash.

In 2000, the mission King was a part of was depicted in the movie “Men of Honor” starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert Dinero.

King would also serve in Naples and Guantanamo Bay before his Honorable Discharge in September of 1967.

He returned to Oldenburg and locals may recall when he owned King's Tavern.

Bob is now a proud employee of StoneBridge Trucking since 2018.

StoneBridge CEO Shane Kennedy says it took some time to find out King served in the military because how quickly he got involved in company operations.

"Luckily today, his proud story will no longer be private. Thanks to Bob, these interesting years have been divulged for the StoneBridge family and their customers to enjoy and appreciate," Kennedy said.
