Veteran of the Week: Wilbur Tressler

Service to country and community

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) -- It is amazing to think that World War 2 ended 79 years ago.

The National World War 2 Museum estimates that of the 16 million men and women who served from the United States, only 119,000 are still living and each day an additional 131 veterans die.

Today we honor a member of the Greatest Generation who turns 97 on March 30, Decatur Counties beloved Wilbur E. Tressler.

Wilbur graduated from Napoleon High School before serving during World War 2 where

he joined the United States Army. He rose to being a staff sergeant where his classification was Sharpshooter M1 Rifle.

Following the war he moved to Fugit Township in Decatur County where he has been a dedicated farmer ever since. Family was always a top priority to him: wife, Coleen, one son, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Tressler’s involvement in and service to the community started many years ago as a Township Farm Bureau leader. His contributions have been many.

Tressler was also involved with many other organizations in the community, including

the 4-H Extension Board, he organized and coached the Clarksburg Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams, was chairman of the Decatur County United Fund drive, and has served as president and been on the board of the Decatur County YMCA.

He also received the distinguished community service award for outstanding farmer in Fugit Township at the Tree City Fall Festival, was active in the Lake Santee Kiwanis Club, was a long time board member for the Decatur County REMC, was on the board for the Decatur County Council for Youth, was an elder in the long-time Springhill Presbyterian Church and was on the Fugit Township Advisory Board and in 1993 he received the Optimist of the Year Award.

The person who nominated him also added that Wilbur is a longtime fan of the North Decatur Chargers!
