Popular TV show spotlighted local emergency in 1993
(NAPOLEON, Ind.) – The television series Rescue 911 was hosted by William Shatner and was on CBS from 1989 to 1996.
The show featured reenactments of real emergencies that happened across the country.
In 1993, the show spotlighted an emergency that occurred in the Napoleon area.
Floyd and Mary Engel had been married for 28 years. Mary left for work on the morning of June 23, 1992.
A few hours later, Floyd called her place of work and found out Mary never made it.
He started driving down roads where he thought Mary may have traveled. He came across skid marks and her car down a steep embankment.
Floyd called 9-1-1 and the Batesville Fire Department, Napoleon Fire and the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office all responded.
Among the firefighters that responded was Floyd and Mary’s son, Jason, as well as Mary’s brother Larry Shadday.
“The scariest moment was realizing it was my mother down the bank. It was hard standing there, it was really hard,” Jason told Rescue 911.
