Police hope this encourages parents to teach kids
(NORTH VERNON, Ind.) -- A 7-year-old girl is being recognized for her quick actions when her grandmother was injured in North Vernon.
The grandmother fell down a staircase at her home and that's when Maklynn Speer immediately picked up the phone and called 9-1-1.
"Maklynn's calm response ensured swift help, with emergency responders arriving promptly to provide crucial medical assistance," the Jennings County Sheriff's Office said.
Officials are hoping the young girl's awareness of 9-1-1 will serve as a reminder to parents of the potential life-saving impact of teaching kids how to react under pressure.
"We're incredibly proud of Maklynn's quick actions," said Dallas and Jordyn Mullins, Maklynn's parents. "This reinforces the need to equip our children with essential life skills."
Maklynn's family hopes her bravery inspires others to empower their children with similar knowledge of knowing what to do during an emergency.
