(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – A local non-profit gives Ripley County teens a unique opportunity every summer.
Youth to Yellowstone of Ripley County takes teenagers, who couldn't afford to go otherwise, on a trip out west for nearly two weeks.
Local school counselors are currently being asked to nominate the eligible students who attend high schools in Ripley County.
The students will see Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the Badlands and Yellowstone National Park. They will camp, cook, learn photography skills, hike, and learn about the wild animals they see while out scouting.
“Many, who have never traveled far from their homes, will learn new things about themselves, and the larger world around them,” organizers said.
The program is entirely donation-based to provide a free trip for the students. Adult chaperones are also welcome but do have to pay their own expenses.
The organization provides food, transportation by van, hotels and campsites, as well as other students’ needs.
“Some students need hiking shoes and socks, as well as other personal items.” Y2Y board president Bill Riley noted.
