Updated: Sep 23, 2023

Crash happened on Harrison Brookville Road

(WEST HARRISON, Ind.) -- The former Brookville police chief has passed away after a motorcycle crash in Dearborn County Thursday night.

The crash occurred around 8 p.m. Thursday on Harrison Brookville Road near U.S. 52.

53-year-old Tim Wilkerson died after being flown the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Crash investigators say the accident appeared to have been caused by a deer that he swerved to miss but struck anyway.

Wilkerson began his law enforcement career with the Laurel Police Department in 1998.

He became a full-time patrolman with Brookville in 2003 and over the years rose through the ranks to become police chief in 2014. He served in that position until 2017.

"Wilkerson dedicated 19 years of his life to the service of others through law enforcement and during that time touched the hearts of many in our community. Wilkerson was a loving father, grandfather, and a beloved friend," Brookville Police Chief Terry Mitchum said.

He continued his service to others as a member of the Warthogs Motorcycle Club where he assisted in raising money for many community improvements and charities, including the Brookville Police Department K9 program, Mitchum added.

"He had a big heart, and his presence alone would brighten any room he entered. Wilkerson had a way of keeping a smile on the face of his coworkers even during the most difficult times," Mitchum added.

Mitchum says the Brookville Police Department will be forever grateful for the impact Wilkerson had on the department.
